With the current weather outside, spring may seem like ages away. But before you know, the freezing cold winter weather will be replaced by sunnier temperatures complete with flower shows, food festivals and outdoor flea markets. Now that there’s still some time left, it might be a good moment to start preparing for your spring break. The months leading up to spring in New York City come with a few amazing flower shows to get you in the mood.
The Orchid Show
One of the most exotic happenings of the year start as early as this month, just at that moment we’re finishing off with the cold. At The Orchid Show in The Botanical Garden (located in The Bronx), you can find nearly 7,000 different species of beautiful blossoming orchids. The annual event, attracting more than 150,000 visitors each spring, makes it a lot easier to look forward to the summer. If you want to save money, it’s best to attend this mind-blowing experience during the week: tickets will be only $23 instead of the $28 on the weekends.
Sakura Matsuri, also known as the New York Cherry Blossom Festival, is one of the prettiest flower festivals in the city and will make you feel like you’re entering a different world. The virtually stunning event in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden celebrates Japanese culture and the beauty of nature. In addition to cherry blossoms at their peak, you can admire a Japanese tea room, an art gallery and a mini flea market. The festival happens in late April, so make sure to add it to your To-Do list for Spring Break. Tickets to the flower show are $30 for adults and $25 for students and seniors.
Frieze New York
For everyone who loves art, the Frieze Art Fair in May is something you don’t want to miss out on. Randall’s Island, located in the East River, becomes the epicenter of the art world during this four-day art fair, housed under a massive tent. You can admire the art of over 1,000 leading artists while enjoying the soft spring weather. Don’t wait too long before getting your ticket to this artistic experience: there now is a limited offer of $12 tickets for everyone aged 18-25.
